a student of mine made
while discussing a topic
of little importance

I teach the topic of little importance
namely, culture
of a country I used to call mine

Art doesn’t change shit
said a poet of the country
where I live now

neither does culture

what is culture?

Depends who you ask,
a nurse at your family physician’s office
for example

We make it up,
I mean, culture is made of us and we, of culture
It is what we make of it

A teacher of little importance
teaching a topic of little importance,
I stumble upon
a skandalon
of no little importance –
and free-fall
into the crack
between my past and the other’s future

The invisible bridge
hits me hard
sandals of the legionnaires
hooves of the steeds
tidal waves
ant colonies
walk, trample, wash, crawl
all over me

In the morning
I spring to life as an ear of grain
as a sweaty reaper
as a cruel ruler
as a desperate singer
of horror and bliss
